Manuscript Monday: LJS 45 – Book of the dead. Selections.

Dot Porter, Curator, Digital Research Services at the University of Pennsylvania Library, offers a video orientation to Penn Library’s LJS 45 -Papyrus fragments from The book of the dead. This manuscript was written in Egypt, between 300 and 150 B.C., and it includes nine illustrated fragments from a manuscript on papyrus of The book of the dead, a collection of spells and incantations buried with the dead to protect them in the afterlife. The fragments include text in hieratic script in black and red ink.
