2023-2024 SIMS Graduate Student Fellow

SIMS is pleased to announce the 2023–2024 Graduate Student Fellowship recipient:

Julia Pelosi-Thorpe, University of Pennsylvania

Julia Pelosi-Thorpe is an Italian-Australian PhD student in Italian Studies/Comparative Literature and Literary Theory at the University of Pennsylvania. Using a recently acquired 15th-century Italian book of hours as a case study, her fellowship project “Making (and Remaking) Texts Past, Present, and Future” grapples with the question of how manuscripts’ layers of material manipulation across the centuries shape how they have been understood, described, and associated with other texts.

Pelosi-Thorpe’s research interests include reception/adaptation/translation studies, cultures of textual production from scribal to print to digital, and language pedagogy.  In addition to her academic work, she translates Latin, Italian, and Parmesan Dialect poetry. Her translations have appeared in the Journal of Italian Translation, Asymptote, Modern Poetry in Translation, The Poetry Review, The Hopkins Review, and other literary magazines.
